Hassanein Hiridjee, a businessman from Madagascar, CEO of Axian group, created Fondation H in 2017, aiming at supporting contemporary art practices from the african continent and its diasporas. Fondation H runs two exhibitions spaces, in Antananarivo (Madagascar) and Paris (France), and sponsors major international exhibitions.

"I was delighted to explore the selection of galleries at this edition of 1-54 New York, a great mix of galleries from Africa, Europe and the US, but also two interesting new platforms to me: HOA from Brazil and Espace D'art Contemporain 14N 61W from Martinique in the Caribbean. I was very curious to explore presentations made by these galleries with artists coming from these geographies, even tough they’re not strictly the focus of Fondation H’s collection and programmes. The selection of artworks I’ve made here is more focused on the African continent and its diasporas. I was delighted to see beautiful artworks by internationally renowned artists from North Africa such as Fathi Hassan, Rachid Koraïchi and Ibrahim El Dessouki. And some interesting younger voices, including several South African artists such as Zemba Luzamba, Khatlego Thabela, Kimathi Mafafo, and Turiya Magadlela, among many other continental artists that I’ve highlighted below."
