Spanish Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale

“Los Sujetos [The Subjects]”

Artists: Pepo Salazar, Helena Cabello and Ana Carceller, Francesc Ruiz, Salvador Dalí

Curator: Martí Manen

Commissioner: Ministerio Asuntos Exteriores. Gobierno de España

Venue: Pavilion at Giardini

Do not be surprised by the listing of Salvador Dalí as an artist. Indeed, the well-known surrealist painter has been dead for many years, but in homage to “the persistence of memory,” his words and interviews, rather than his oeuvre, inspire three projects within the Spanish Pavilion. Dalí becomes a concept upon which Salazar, Cabello/Carceller, and Ruiz use film, comics, and objects to reinvent the private and public spheres of an icon. As the title of the pavilion suggests, the “subjects” not only reflect social conceptualization of Dalí but also refract the means by which society creates identity.
