What Inspired Contemporary Aritst Judith Seligson to Translate Her Paintings Into Rugs

- When Judith Seligson, New York City-based geometric abstratact artist was redesigning her apartment in advance of a photo shoot with Modern Magazine, she seized the moment to take on a long gestating creative endeavor: to translate her paintings into rugs. "Just as artists collaborate with master print makers--at Gemini G.E.L. or Crown Point Press, for example -- I collaborated with Barbara Barran, founder of Classic Rug Collection." In the rug "Decisive," the largest of the limited edition four piece collection, there are pencil carving between the color blocks which echoes the finely-carved etches between the shapes in the paintings. The palette is so precise, Seligson says, because she chose the colors from a vast palette of wool and silk tufts. "There was no scan or digital file to approximate thousands of miles away," she says. The Art Rug Collection provide a differnet way and medium for Seligson to play with shapes and colors. "I'm interested in visual melodies, which are now performing on my rugs," she says. Making rugs is something Seligson has been thinking about since the 1980s when she lived in India and made a "dhurrie," a thick, flat weave known for its graphic colors. Over thirty years later and half away around the globe, Seligson realized her vision.
