Defying the assumption that their medium was exclusively documentary, photographers throughout the 20th century have employed techniques to push their images toward abstraction, from Man Ray’s photograms to Alfred Stieglitz and Aaron Siskind’s radical close-ups and crops. Today, photographers like Matthew Brandt, Karl Baden, and Alison Rossiter continue this tradition, blurring their subjects into abstraction or even skipping the image altogether and directly manipulating the photographic paper itself.
