About the Series

In May 2021, Artsy surveyed art collectors to learn how their buying habits changed over the past two years as the art market increasingly embraced online tools and platforms, a shift that was accelerated by pandemic-necessitated shutdowns. Art collectors are increasingly comfortable discovering artists and purchasing artworks online: 84% of collectors said they’ve bought art online, a 30% increase from our previous survey in 2019. But sticking points remain. Visible pricing and the ability to purchase artworks with a credit card emerged as two key opportunities that could lead to art market expansion.

In our analysis of collectors’ responses, we look at their changing research and buying habits, and the passions and motivations driving their collecting practices. We also zoom in on the activities of a subset of newer entrants to the art market, Next-Gen Collectors, who are significantly more comfortable buying art online, specifically from their phones. A better understanding of these collectors—at every step of their journey—will benefit the art market, provide more opportunities for artists, and support more galleries.
