"I especially hope to inspire young women, because I often feel like so much emphasis is put on how beautiful you are, and how thin you are, and not a lot of emphasis is put on what you can do and how smart you are. I'd like to change the emphasis of what's important when looking at a woman."

—Margaret Kilgallen, from the Art21 Exclusive video, Margaret Kilgallen: Heroines

For International Women's Day, we premiere a new video from our Exclusive series featuring artist Margaret Kilgallen (1967–2001) discussing the female figures incorporated into many of her paintings and graffiti tags. Filmed in 2000, this newly-edited video contains previously unreleased footage with the late artist.

(Each week throughout 2013, Art21 will feature new and archival content as part of our "100 Artists" celebration. Learn more at art21.org/100artists.)
