In the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, one of the world’s most oppressive and isolated countries, being an artist is a government position, the benefits of which include a monthly salary and government-approved studio, with the stipulation of producing propaganda only. With an international market that is supported mainly by China, several Beijing galleries have capitalized on this unique partnership, commissioning works which are–as might be expected–both dystopic and bizarre.
