After much anticipation, the list of artists who will be participating in the 2019 Venice Biennale has been made public. This year’s central exhibition, “May You Live in Interesting Times,” which was curated by Hayward Gallery director Ralph Rugoff and aims to make the dissemination of misinformation its central theme (aka it will take on fake news), will include 79 entries by a total of 83 artists.
The list features a particularly young crowd—more than one-third of the participating artists were born in the 1980s or later. The list includes integral art world figures as George Condo, Carol Bove, Nicole Eisenman, Arthur Jafa, Christian Marclay, Julie Mehretu, Henry Taylor, Rosemarie Trockel, and Hito Steyerl, as well as a number of younger artists who have been garnering a great deal of buzz in recent years including Korakrit Arunanondchai, Jesse Darling, Martine Gutierrez, and Avery Singer. The show opens just before another closely watched biennial with an artist list that skews young and diverse—the 2019 Whitney Biennial—and will run from May 11th through November 24th.
