Today Artsy has released the list of its 2023 Vanguard artists. Encompassing a range of perspectives and subject matter, these artists are some of the most promising names working today. They are Sarah Cunningham, Harminder Judge, Basil Kincaid, Yoora Lee, Li Hei Di, Cinthia Sifa Mulanga, Shota Nakamura, Soumya Netrabile, Paula Siebra, and Tesfaye Urgessa.
This group of rising stars was selected through a public open call that resulted in over 2,300 nominations, from which Artsy’s editorial and curatorial teams hand-picked the most promising names. Artists were selected through evaluating recent work and exhibition history, as well as their social media and artist websites, to find the most promising talent. Selected artists’ work will be featured on a billboard in Times Square for two weeks and on MTA subway platforms in New York during November and December 2023.
Artists featured in past editions of The Artsy Vanguard have ended up having major success in the art world. Lauren Halsey (who was featured in the Artsy Vanguard 2019), for instance, recently announced her representation by Gagosian; and Lap-See Lam (featured in The Artsy Vanguard 2021) recently had a critically acclaimed show at the Swiss Institute in New York, and will be representing the Nordic countries at next year’s Venice Biennale. The annual list has been running since 2018.
“We are so pleased to share another edition of Artsy’s Vanguard list,” said Mike Steib, Artsy’s CEO. “Each year, the Vanguard is a moment to examine how the art world is growing and evolving, and celebrate the artists who are forging that path.”
