Berlin gallery Capitain Petzel now represents up-and-coming Polish artist Mikołaj Sobczak.
Tastemaking Berlin gallery Capitain Petzel now represents Mikołaj Sobczak, and will present a selection of new works by the Polish artist at this year’s edition of Paris+ par Art Basel in October.
Sobczak works in a variety of mediums, including painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, video, and performance, often in collaboration with the artist Nicholas Grafia. His practice is focused on surreal reimaginings of everyday scenes, where protagonists from queer and transgender activism are often inserted, creating alternative historical narratives.
In 2021, Sobczak was awarded the Paszport Polityki, Poland’s most prestigious art prize. He was an artist-in-residence at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam between 2021 and 2023, and this month, he will participate in the biannual residency program with Art Explora - Cité internationale des arts in Paris. His first solo show with the gallery will open in 2024.
