Republic of Korea Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale

“The Ways of Folding Space & Flying”

Artist: Kyungwon Moon, Joonho Jeon

Curator: Sook-Kyung Lee

Commissioner: Sook-Kyung Lee

Venue: Pavilion at Giardini

Working together since 2009, artist duo Kyungwon Moon & Joonho Jeon have a remarkable ability for crossing verticals. Their video installations at once engage in deep art historical analysis and inquiries of a scientific, political, and philosophical nature. Best known for News from Nowhere (2012), which debuted at Documenta 13 and takes its name and thematic orientation from William Morris’s 1890 sci-fi socialist manifesto.

For the 2015 Venice Biennale, Moon and Jeon have created a new immersive video installation in the Korean Pavilion. The Ways of Folding Space & Flying continues the pair’s slightly futurist bent, weaving back and forth between an archeological dig through the history of human civilization (light stuff, we know) and glances forward to give a prognostic look at the consequences of our current actions.
