Two Chelsea galleries, Tanya Bonakdar and Kasmin, will expand into new spaces.

On Thursday, two different galleries in Chelsea announced that they would take on new spaces—apparently, the wave of gallery expansion continues apace. First, Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, which was founded in SoHo in 1994 and has been located at 521 West 21st Street since 1998, announced that it would create another branch in Los Angeles, set to open in July with a show of work by Charles Long. “We are thrilled to be expanding our program to the West Coast and offering our gallery as a platform for our artists who do not have representation in Los Angeles,” the gallery said in a statement. It will be located on North Highland Avenue just below Santa Monica Boulevard, walking distance from galleries such as Regen Projects and Various Small Fires.

Meanwhile, Kasmin has planted another flag in Chelsea, adding to its mini-fiefdom around the intersection of 10th Avenue and West 27th Street. The gallery already has three spots within spitting distance, and in October it will open a fourth, at 509 West 27th Street, with a show of new work by Walton Ford. The press release revealed that there will also be a sculpture garden on the roof that is viewable from the High Line, and the 5,000 square feet of outdoor exhibition space will be inaugurated with a show of bronzes by Joel Shapiro.
