The Art Genome Project is a large-scale metadata project undertaken by art historians towards providing the best possible art search. Art historians assign relevant characteristics to artists and artworks to help users find what they are looking for and better understand the aspects of art.

Browse all 500+ of the genes (i.e. search categories) one could use to discuss art, architecture or design, or type an artist or artwork in the search bar and find artists and artworks recommended to you by the project, based on shared characteristics.

Searching on the site often leads to serendipitously looking at a related artist or artwork you never expected to see. Also, all of the genes are defined, so Artsy additionally functions as a user-friendly, visual art dictionary.
