Tang Contemporary: Yang Yong

In intimate portraits of urban youth—à la Cindy Sherman and Nan Goldin—Yang Yong captures self-conscious, fleeting moments in the lives of his peers. Like Yong, his subjects belong to the ambiguous and changing zeitgeist of a generation growing up in 1970s China, dubbed the “awkward generation”—their longing stares evidence of a group trying to find their footing post-Cultural Revolution.
