Though he works in several mediums, Mathias Poledna is best known for his films and film-based installations—perhaps because of his reference to traditions and techniques used in cinema. Poledna frequently manipulates framing devices, editing, and the relationship between sound and image; he also characteristically plays with repetition, compression, and omission. The subjects of his works span a broad range, from anthropology and ethnography, to art and cultural history. His approach, however, remains investigative and research-oriented. Recurring motifs in his film works include projected light, architecture, and popular music; more recently, his projects have taken the form of minimal installations.
