All through Kurt Schwitters' practice he was obsessed with his "Merz" collages, crafted using a plethora of materials gathered from the deride of modern life. The work even entered his home as he spent years transforming the interiors of several of his houses into grand Merz works. Pictured is one of six rooms in Schwitters' first Merzbau built in his family home in Hannover from 1923-33. Although the original Merzbau was destroyed in bombings during World War II a reconstruction of this room exists at the Sprengel Museum in Hannover.
