Featured Artist: Christina Hutchings (Bermuda Biennial 2014: A View From the Edge)
Christina Hutchings, Horizon Room, 2014, painted wood and various objects, 8 x 15 x 9 ft. Collection of the artist.
The inspiration for this piece is drawn from the Island’s unique geographical isolation and its social and cultural structure that is simultaneously global and regional.
The project is a constructed space designed to contain the viewer or encourage the viewer to stand in relation to the piece. The constructed space is a synthesis of architecture, sculpture and painting.
The concepts of our common bonds, our experience of the horizon line, the simultaneous experiences of confinement and expansiveness, isolation and globalization, provide the analogies for the design of the work. This project’s form is a diagram of a concept with visual clues associated with the concept, such as a rope or a string line, providing clues to the content.
