Featured Artist: Signe Constable (Bermuda Biennial 2014: A View From the Edge)
When I moved to Tokyo last year I felt isolated in a way I had never experienced before. During my time there I took thousands of self-portraits as well as thousands of photographs of all the things I saw whilst exploring Japan on a day-to-day basis.
This series, entitled Ianto, includes a self-portrait taken in my rented bedroom on the left and a corresponding photo from Japan on the right. Here, the idea was to marry the loneliness I felt with these amazing experiences that I was having, to highlight the general dissatisfaction and feeling of isolation almost everyone seems to have with life, regardless of what is actually happening.
These images relate to the exhibition’s theme because they represent both sides of any edge in the world. There’s a clear gap or line to signify the space between everything, even when it’s not seen by anyone.
The size of the artwork encourages the audience to look closely. I wanted to achieve an almost uncomfortable feeling as if the viewer sees a part of my life that I haven’t so obviously decided to share.
