Zarina's Reflections of Indian Summers

Mar 15, 2013 9:10PM

Morning, Afternoon, Evening and Night, from the series "Home is a Foreign Place" depicts the Aligarh home in Northern India where Zarina Hashmi grew up. The painting is the artist's representation of a loving poem full of longing and nostalgia. Zarina writes the text in Urdu for her works and then brings her words to life on the canvas. In this image, one can't help think of a long hot afternoon in India--without a ceiling fan. This piece is part of a body of work currently being featured at her Guggenheim retrospective now on view.
