Once, while discussing traces of El Greco and Cezanne seen in some of his earlier pictures, Picasso had rumbled, in his bass fiddle voice, "Naturally! Every painter must have a father and a mother." (David Douglas Duncan, Picasso's Picassos, 1968, p. 46)
