The Renaissance Society: Rodney Graham, Kerry James Marshall, and Arturo Herrera

Rodney Graham’s cinematic champagne glass, Kerry James Marshall’s commemorative plates, and Arturo Herrera’s elegant vase would make a fine table setting for any New Year’s celebration. Once called a “Duchampian trickster”, Graham’s precarious figure comes straight from his 1997 video work Vexation Island, in which Graham himself played a stranded sailor vexed by a balky coconut. Marshall’s five porcelain plates pay tribute to the civil rights and black power movements of the 1950s through ’70s; and Herrera’s vase embodies his characteristic interlacing and sinuous forms.
