Here is a design show I am looking forward to. Entitled “Koloman Moser: Designing Modern Vienna 1897-1907." It will open at the Neue Galerie on May 23rd as a monographic exhibition devoted to an exceptional designer and Wiener Werksättte co-founder. The curator, Dr. Christian Witt-Dörring is not only the world’s expert on that material, but was also a member in the committee of the oral exam I had taken on my dissertation at the Bard Graduate Center in 2006.

Moser is not as well-known or well-exposed as his partner Josef Hoffmann, but his work in interior design, graphics, furniture, textiles, jewelry, metalwork, glass, and earthenware is magical. As a member of the Vienna Secession he had become a key figure in the reform design movement, and is ought to be considered one of the earliest modernists. When visited the Steinhof Church in Vienna, I viewed his work firsthand, but much of his commissions were private, so here is a show to look forward to this spring.
