Karl Benjamin: Alphabet Paintings opens at David Klein Gallery, 163 Townsend St, Birmingham, Michig this Saturday, March 24th. The exhibition will run through April 28th.
In 1959, the groundbreaking exhibition, Four Abstract Classicists, opened at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition focused on the work of Karl Benjamin, Lorser Feitelson, John McLaughlin, and Frederick Hammersley. Each of these Los Angeles based painters shared an interest in minimalist, hard edge abstraction. The exhibition quickly gained worldwide recognition and traveled to Los Angeles, London, and Belfast under the title West Coast Hard Edge. In the mid 1960s, Benjamin began to take an even more minimal and reductive approach to his work. His Alphabet Paintings with their symmetrical, overlaid colorful block forms are the culmination of this new approach.
This will be the first time this body of work has been shown in the Detroit area.
Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11am - 5:30pm.
