Robert Motherwell: Early Collages opens on May 26 at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, and will be on view until September 8, at the same time as this year’s Venice Biennale. This is a focused exhibition devoted exclusively to Motherwell’s collages and related works on paper from the 1940s and early 1950s. It will illuminate the origins of Motherwell’s mature style and his revelatory encounter with the papier collé technique, which he described as “the twentieth century’s greatest creative innovation.”

The exhibition, curated by Susan Davidson,  Senior Curator, Collections and Exhibitions, at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, features a compelling group of approximately 60 works drawn from the holdings of institutions and private collections in the United States and abroad. A fully illustrated exhibition catalogue offers a vital exploration of Motherwell’s work in the collage medium. The exhibition will travel to its second and final venue, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, from September 27, 2013–January 5, 2014.
