On May 25, 2013, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice hosted a press preview and opening celebration for the newly installed Robert Motherwell: Early Collages. Hundreds of visitors toured exhibition spaces filled with nearly 60 of Motherwell's collages and related works on paper from the 1940s and early 1950s. Highlights included beautifully preserved examples of the brightly hued papers that Motherwell used in his very first collage efforts and a selection of rarely and never exhibited collages from private and public collections around the world. Curator Susan Davidson spoke on the importance of collage in Motherwell's oeuvre and of his innovations in the medium.

The exhibition will remain on view in Venice through September 8, 2013 and then travel to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York from September 27, 2013 to January 5, 2014.
