Robert Motherwell: Theme and Variations

The following is a short clip from “Robert Motherwell: Theme and Variations,” a half hour interview that was broadcast in the fall of 1964 as part of the public television series Art: New York. In the program Motherwell discusses his art making process and the meaning of Modern Art with host Bryan Robertson, curator of the Whitechapel Art Gallery, London.  In the powerful closing scene shown here Motherwell describes the values that govern his painting.
