In an interview explaining his more recent work, including Exclamation Point (Black) (2012), 88-year-old Richard Artschwager frequently referred to Sigmund Freud’s  “pleasure principle”, which states that everyone’s primary motivation is to avoid pain and seek pleasure. According to Artschwager, this motive is driving his practice as well. “You can make pleasure for oneself,” he said, “but there is pleasure in making pleasure for other people too. There isn’t any art until some creature sees and consumes it. And has a reaction.”
