Isamu Noguchi spent his career experimenting and innovating, ultimately creating a body of elegant sculptures and furnishings that were highly influential in the development of 20th-century art and design. Throughout his career, the acclaimed sculptor traveled the world and met many artists, architects, and dancers, with whom he collaborated on projects, exhibited, and became friends. From working as Constantin Brancusi’s assistant to studying painting with Qi Baishi (a relationship explored in an exhibition at the Noguchi Museum), befriending Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera during a trip to Mexico and collaborating with Martha Graham on costumes and sets for her performances, the artist was largely affected by the creative people he met and worked with. In honor of his birthday we gather a selection of works by Noguchi’s esteemed friends and collaborators.
