Seventeenth-century French painter Claude Lorrain attracted many fans and admirers, both during his lifetime and after. These include writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who famously said that Lorrain’s pastoral and beatific landscapes revealed “the world’s beautiful soul.”
