If Abdur Rahman Chughtai’s court scenes appear to be taken right out of a Mughal painting, it’s because they were. The Pakistani painter, often considered the first modern Muslim artist to emerge from South Asia, was known for painting nobility in idyllic settings and ornate interiors—a style that referenced his Mughal heritage through a contemporary lens.
