Happy Birthday to the king of satire … and indeed, the one who satirized the king. Honoré Daumier, known for his caricatures of 19th-century French government and society, once found himself in jail for six months for creating a lithograph that depicted King Louis-Philippe as the monster Gargantua, feeding on the riches extorted from his people. Fearing further persecution, thereafter Daumier would shift his target to the Parisian bourgeoisie.
