In the Studio with Ghada Amer: Sculpture

“In 2010 I got this commission from the Contemporary Arab Museum in Doha, Qatar. I wanted to make a hollow object where the shadows become as important as the sculpture. The [sculptures] are shaped like dolmens—you know, like in England and France, those rocks they put in the forest to channel energy. For me it was more rocks. So I made my drawing on these hard shapes, then I put clay on top of the drawings. We made a resin cast scale 1 of 1 that we sent to the foundry to recast it in bronze or stainless steel.”—
