Love me, love me not
How many flowers have met their demise by the unease of confused hearts? “He loves me, he loves me not, he loves me”— the flower-pickers chant, leaving behind a path of petals.
When it comes to woodworking, South African designer John Vogel’s heart lies with timber and traditional craft, inspired by the organic forms of his local habitat. “South Africa is full of wild animals, beautiful landscapes, beautiful plants, and all of those really influence my work,” he says. “People naturally respond to beauty of form and especially where it has a point of origin, and for me that is nature and traditional craft.” On that note, Vogel’s Love me, love me not nested tables—created in collaboration with Justin Plunkett—recall the tell-tale flower, sculpted in timber and bronze, patiently hoping for requited love.
