“It takes a long time to become young.” —Pablo Picasso

On Picasso’s birthday, we draw attention to the modern master’s unending influence on contemporary art. From his Cubist transformations of his lovers, to still lifes with guitars, to the Spanish civil war masterpiece Guernica, Picasso’s compositions and motifs are icons embedded in the history of art. Even the image of the artist himself, popularized by photographs in LIFE magazine, has become synonymous with artistic genius. Through appropriation and direct quotation, modern and contemporary artists have built up a canon of Picasso-inspired works. So, on what would have been Picasso’s 132nd birthday, we offer a selection of contemporary Picasso-esque works, honoring the the artist who will always be young.
