It seems the undying temptation of St. Anthony and his haunting, supernatural sojourns in the Egyptian desert (you know, the one where the reclusive Saint is tormented by temptation from the Devil) are to be forever incarnate through literary and artistic retellings. This time, Takeo Hanazawa prepares the most recent iteration in Study for the Temptation of St. Anthony—it’s a slightly less frightening interpretation than say, Matthias Grunewald’s ghoulish version, at right.

On view at Gallery Side 2, Art Basel in Hong Kong - Insights, Booth IC17, May 23rd – 26th.
