Flaubert laid out the theme of his Sentimental Education in a letter to Marie-Sophie Leroyer de Chantepie in 1864: “It's a book about love, about passion; but passion as it can exist nowadays, that is to say, inactive."

For expressions of active passion, why not think of Elizabeth Murray’s 1982 Sentimental Education, Lynda Benglis’ 1972 Sparkle Knot IV, and Eugene Martin’s 1986 An Enlightened Nose.
