"The remarkable thing about these new paintings is that although they deal with the plainest (and sometimes some of the least dignified) of human activities they impress at once by their heroic stature. They have something of Kirchner's direct and unsparing approach to the human body in movement and something of the chromatic wildness of Heckel, and yet they are pure Baselitz."
