Galerie Gmurzynska is pleased to present the second solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based artist Scott Campbell titled "The Smartest Thing I Ever Did Were Foolish Things For Love"dedicated to the theme of love.

Emerging from the legendary New York group of artists of the early 2000’s, consisting of Nate Lowman, Dan Colen and Dash Snow, Campbell has become an internationally recognized figure within the art world. Known for his intricate works in a variety of unusual and exciting mediums, Campbell is at the forefront of young artists reintroducing craft and technique into art.

Having recently married Sundance award-winning filmmaker, screenwriter and actress, Lake Bell, Campbell was inspired to make a new body of work - love statements - which use a variety of mediums including paintings, watercolors and sculptures.

A site-specific installation of his large Fuse Paintings, depicting roses, will inhabit the entirety of the ground floor of the gallery. The Fuse Paintings were created using designs drawn with gunpowder and then lit on fire continu his artistic exploration into drawings, iconography and cutting edge mediums.

In addition to his artistic career, Campbell maintains an active practice as one of the most renowned tattoo artists in the world. His living designs can be seen on Marc Jacobs, Penelope Cruz, Johnny Depp, Nan Goldin, Elizabeth Peyton, Carter Foster (tattoo designed by Ellsworth Kelly) and Richard Prince among many others.

Campbell was born in 1977 and raised in Louisiana. His practice has led him to live around the world, including Tokyo, Paris, Los Angeles and South America. Campbell was invited by Marc Jacobs to participate in Louis Vuitton’s artist collaboration series for Spring/Summer 2011. Past participants have included Takashi Murakami and Richard Prince. He has also recently collaborated with Pirelli, designing a motorcycle, tires and accessories.

In February 2012, Rizzoli published a monograph on Campbell, “If You Don’t Belong, Don’t Be Long”, which explores tattooing, art and the human body. In April 2014, Campbell will be honored by Free Arts NYC charity at an event sponsored by Marc Jacobs.

A fully illustrated catalogue will be published to coincide with this exhibition with essays by Elizabeth Peyton and Neville Wakefield
