Now symbolizing peace, the emblem in the poster is a combination of two semaphores (signals with flags) N and D, standing for "nuclear disarmament."  When turned upside down, the symbol is the ancient sign for man.

Thomas W. Benton, a devoted peace activist and artist,  created numerous peace posters against the Vietnam War and the Nixon administration in the late 1960's and early 1970's.
