Jorge Luis Borges on James Abbott McNeill Whistler

When asked how much time he spent painting one of his Nocturnes, Whistler responded: "my whole life." He equally could have said that it required all of the preceding centuries up to that moment... The slightest event presupposes an inconceivable universe and, conversely, the universe needs even the slightest of events.
