"I had to find the buried treasure, so grams I had to measure
However living better now, Gucci sweater now
Drop top BM's, I'm the man girlfriend."
-Notorious B.I.G., Big Poppa

Jayson Musson's Coogi sweater "paintings" pay homage to art and pop culture by stitching together pieces of the iconic sweaters worn by hip hop legend Notorious B.I.G. (see also Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable) into gestural patterns reminiscent of Abstract Expressionist paintings. The title of this piece is a line from Biggie's classic Big Poppa. The loud Coogi sweaters were very much a status symbol and were a chance for the rapper to boast about his lyrical and sartorial superiority.

Check out this interview on the Smithsonian's blog for more on the artist's inspiration.
