You might speculate that the vase is just a vase. Magritte excited the Freudian instinct to see objects as ciphers when he painted The Treachery of Images with its bold injunction 'Ceci n'est pas une pipe'. A pipe was after all, not a pipe, but its representation. Does the vase stand for something else? Is it a metaphor for rebirth, of delivery from darkness into light? Does it invoke the history and rebirth of China? Or perhaps it is something literal. In matters of aesthetics, form does not always follow function. Those sinuous curves and the fluted neck - is it actually the remembrance of a warm naked body? Or is it a reliquary perhaps, for the ashes of a loved one.
