“You play like a girl!”It’s not the first time she’s heard it. The taunt “like a girl” has followed her at every turn. She witnessed boys throw the phrase around at each other on the playground when she was young, and she saw that the insult made eyes glow and punches fly out. Even now, as she weaves her scooter through the Jing’an traffic, she hears, “Move it! You’re driving like a girl!” She wonders when doing anything like a girl become an insult. She muses that her female body can do everything that a man’s can, and then some. She thinks, “If I throw the ball to home plate, yeah, I throw like a girl. If I kick the ball in the goal, yeah, I kick like a girl.” Every time she steps onto the pitch she feels the blood and adrenaline rush into her XXvchromosome-powered body. When her legs outrun the men on the opposing team, she breathes a sigh of relief that she plays like a girl.
