CAA 2013 in pictures
While the art world is gearing up for the centennial of the 1913 Armory show, one lesser known but arguably equally important institution is a full year ahead of the curve: the annual CAA conference concluded its 101st iteration this past Saturday. CAA, which stands for the College Art Association, is perhaps the leading professional organization of scholars and educators in the visual arts, and their annual conference is a chance to take stock of the incredible diversity of the field. Scholars came together this year to present papers on topics ranging from the digitization and documentation of Maori cultural heritage to the Shape of the Art Market in 1800. While it’s tempting to make broad generalizations about the state of the discipline, with hundreds of talks spread over the course of four days, it’s impossible to discern a single guiding principle. For now, here’s a selection of work discussed by various presenters at the conference.
