Attitude of Gratitude

In the face of challenge, it is important to anchor our connection with what matters most and what we are grateful for. Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for the tangible and intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives, even in times of uncertainty and crisis such as these. Through spending time in a state of gratitude, we can connect to something larger than ourselves as individuals, exploring our connections with one another.

In psychology research, studies support a strong link between gratitude and an individual's well-being, life satisfaction, and overall happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships. Psychologists have found that over time, channeling gratitude can boost happiness and improve both physical and mental health on a long term and short term scale.

We can apply gratitude to the past- through positive memories and thankfulness for past blessings and times of joy; the present- not taking anything for granted and being appreciative for what we do have all frontline workers during the pandemic; and the future- focusing on an optimistic attitude and remaining hopeful. While people feel and express gratitude in multiple ways, in the world’s current state we cannot express enough gratitude for the people, places, and services that are enabling our safety and a return to normalcy.

The beauty of gratitude is that it helps us refocus on all that we have rather than all that we lack, and while quarantined and temporarily separated from our daily routines and freedoms, an attitude of gratitude can reframe our new realities.
