Femme Pop
Anja Van Herle's figurative paintings are inspired by both classic and contemporary style trends while exploring issues of identity, emotion and human interrelationships. Her female figures are playfully sexy and confident, communicating their stories through a composition focused around their eyes. Drawing on elements of fashion, the figures are timeless, iconic, and provocative in their chaste mystery with just that little bit of pop.
Demonstrating a joy in self-assured femininity and sensuality, her works are opulent with a rebellious edge. Never sexualizing her female figures, they remain self-assured and empowered in their portrayals. Placing further emphasis on the face by cropping her figure at the neck, Van Herle’s focus is on what story is told through facial expression, body language, and adorning accessories. Establishing narrative capabilities through her figures’ expressions and eyes, Van Herle’s integration of popular culture and style bring these women to life with stories that extend far beyond fine fashion and portraiture.
Fusing aspects of popular culture and feminism into her portraits, Van Herle borrows imagery from the Pop Art movement, reimagining the approach in a feminine revival. Creating individual identities for each female, long lashes, arched brows, glossed lips, and manicured fingers establish unique personalities and an unwavering sense of glamour. Consciously working on panel, the smooth texture of the wood causes the figures to appear almost airbrushed, naturally compliments the complexion of each portrait.
Selecting brazen color, Van Herle also experiments with the addition of Swarovski crystals into her paintings and prints. Adding additional drama and bling, her practice chronicles the stories of these women by capturing delicate facial expressions and juxtaposing them with vibrant color and the dramatic interplay of shadow and light.
In a unique, feminine touch, the addition of sparkling crystals to the unabashed color, attitude of her figures, and pop art influences, Anja Van Herle imprints each composition with a distinct, artistic signature complete with climactic three-dimensional effect.
Expertly crafting distinct narratives for each of her figures, Van Herle’s work reflects the power of femininity in a radical exploration of fashion, beauty, and the female gaze.
