Harmony of Shape-Now Representing Charles Patrick

Patrick creates simple, clean designs comprised of multitudes of butterflies that seem suspended in mid-flight. His There’s Nothing Left Here to Remind Me utilizes a tight concentric circle composition reminiscent of Johns’ target paintings. Johns famously said that using familiar objects “gives me room to work on other levels”. In a similar approach Patrick’s simple, familiar compositions belie deeper meanings. In addition, Patrick sets strict perimeters on his work by creating compositions solely of butterfly shapes. However, by choosing such a narrow focus, a clear depth of meaning emerges in the work through choice of material, composition, and other variables.
