One work, “Gray Goo” references an idea by the engineer and futurist, Kim Eric Dexler, who first conjectured the invention of molecular nanotechnology. Dexler coined the term to refer to the excess a self-replicating machine would create if it went unchecked. We can imagine a world in which Brickley’s auto-manufactured and then cast works start to recast themselves-forming an infinite line of abstraction into the future.
