In the Wake of John Joel Glanton is a collection of 100 works, India ink on paper, by conceptual artist Matthew J Mahoney.  This series of drawings is inspired by the character John Glanton (as portrayed in the novel Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy), as well as the violence of the American Southwest. I appreciate the work for its simple portrayal and the exhaustive length the artist has chosen to fittingly illustrate the redundancy of this cultural scene. The significance of the work, for me, lies ultimately in the language depicted/omitted in each subject—frozen in a pathetic posture, leaving us with only so many conclusions regarding the fate these men will meet.
