Alexander Zakharov, Jonah, 1992. (Oil on canvas, 48 x 72 in Kolodzei Art Foundation) at the exhibition Concerning the Spiritual in Russian Art, 1965-2011. Selections from the Kolodzei Art Foundation. The Museum of Russian Art, Minneapolis, Minnesota,  January 26, 2013 - June 9, 2013.  Alexander Zakharov writes, “I became interested in this theme in the mid-1990s when I began to liken myself to Jonah swallowed by the whale to test his faith. For me, the United States was like a whale that swallowed me for my sins. It was my faith in my future and in my calling that helped me to overcome feelings of fear and loneliness among the many demons pestering me. The images around the whale represent people that I met while living in the Spanish Harlem.”
